This Is Why We Run and Walk: To Stomp Out CancerIn the summer of 2012, the Santa Barbara team rallied around Stephanie Waxman as she was treated for an aggressive form of leukemia. In October 2012, after a series of grueling chemotherapy, Stephanie received a bone marrow transplant that became the key to her recovery and remission.
In 2013, Stephanie and her parents, Shirley and Ken Waxman, created "Team Stephanie" through Team In Training. Letters from Stephanie and Ken chronicled their experience and inspired the team. Shirley had trained with Santa Barbara TNT since 2006, so she was deeply involved at every level. Team Stephanie's original mission was to train for the NIke Women's Marathon in San Francisco while raising $100,000 for a research project in Stephanie's name. People jumped at the chance to be a part of this amazing effort and over $220,000 dollars were raised!
Today, Stephanie is doing well. The spirit of Team Stephanie carries on, and many of the teammates are still active members of our local Santa Barbara team. We welcome others to join us as we support further research to knock out cancer!
